Cultural IP Lab

Before the spotlight comes the work.

Where African stories are developed with care before they ever meet a crowd.

A YE! performer steps into a single spotlight on a dark stage

Why the Lab exists

Too many good stories get rushed to opening night and forgotten by the next season.

Our stories deserve better. The Lab gives them time.

A great production starts long before opening night. It starts with a story worth telling and the research to understand it and the time to get it right.

Every renaissance leaves behind something that lasts. The Lab makes sure ours does.

What the Lab does

  • Research and discovery

We dig into African history and cultural memory and the way we live now to find stories worth developing.

  • Writing and story development

Characters and scripts and musical worlds shaped through research and dramaturgy and a lot of rewriting.

  • Creative and commercial development

Artistic ambition weighed alongside audiences and production needs and the routes a story can take to touring and licensing and education.

  • Stewardship

Making sure each story can be revisited and taught and performed long after its first run.

We would rather make fewer stories well than many in a hurry.

Would it still matter if the applause stopped?

A good production can fill a theatre for a night. A well-developed story can create value for years.

So we ask the hard questions early.

  1. Why this story?
  2. Why now?
  3. Whose lives does it light up?
  4. What makes it worth passing on?

Stories worth carrying forward.

A small portfolio of original African stories. Each one developed properly and ready for any stage and any classroom and the next generation.
